DETAILS

Mehndi, or henna, is a decorative ceremonial art originating in ancient India. Weddings in India can often be long ritualistic affairs lasting days.  The mehndi ceremony is often one of the most important pre-wedding rituals, especially for the bride. Mehndi is typically used as adornment for the bride to be, sometimes the groom’s name or initials will be hidden in the pattern of the design.  This is said to have come about because of the continued practice of arranged marriages in India. In many cases, it might be the first time that the bride and groom have met. By hiding the groom’s name in the design, it allows them the opportunity to get close to each other, even lightly touching each other, as the groom searches for his name on his new bride, breaking that physical barrier so that a new connection can begin.
