DETAILS

Approximately five hundred years ago the Spaniards conquered the indigenous peoples of Mexico and the Central Valley of Oaxaca. The dance has been said to have originated as an Aztec ritual dance to
communicate with their gods for rain, sun and corn. The contemporary Dance of the Feathers originated from Mixtec and Zapotec dance rituals in Oaxaca under the influence of the Spanish colonizers and was created as a re-enactment of those earlier battles and is still performed as a series of dances in the Zapotec communities of Cuilapam de Guerrero, Teotitlán del Valle, and Zaachila in the Central Valley of Oaxaca. Hailed as the most famous of all of the dances from Mexico, La Danza de La Pluma, or sometimes called La Danza de la Conquista, is performed as the last dance number at the traditional Guelaquetza each year.
