La Danza De Las Plumas, #Zaachila #Oaxaca #Mexico La Danza De Las Plumas, #Zaachila #Oaxaca #Mexico #oaxacangold now on exhibit at the @artcenterwaco thru Aug 13th

The Feather Dance

Approximately five hundred years ago the Spaniards conquered the indigenous peoples of Mexico and the Central Valley of Oaxaca. The dance said to have originated as an Aztec ritual dance to communicate with their gods for rain, sun and corn. The contemporary Dance of the Feathers originated from Mixtec and Zapotec dance rituals in Oaxaca under the influence of the Spanish colonizers and was created as a re-enactment of those earlier battles and is still performed as a series of dances in the Zapotec communities of Cuilapam de Guerrero, Teotitlán del Valle, and Zaachila in the Central Valley of Oaxaca. Hailed as the most famous of all of the dances from Mexico, La Danza de La Pluma, or sometimes called La Danza de la Conquista, is performed as the last dance number at the traditional Guelaguetza each year.

#oaxacangold The glue that keeps it all together. #oaxacangold

The glue that keeps it all together. My dear girlfriend and partner in crime, Amy, has had my back since day one. We are only a few days out from the premiere of the exhibition that I’ve curated and produced for the new Art Center Waco. I started working on “Oaxacan Gold” back in 2018 before we met but she stepped right in and has supported me in this in a BIG way!

I won’t see each of you to tell you this personally so this seems like the forum to do this…I just want to say a public special thank you to Amy @amylynnjewelry here. I couldn’t have, seriously, done this without you babe.

Davis is a contributing photographer for National Geographic/Disney and was represented by the National Geographic Image Collection for over a decade. A fourth generation @bayloruniversity alum, Davis credits an Art Center Waco gallery talk for inspiring his current artistic journey. He has worked his way from local festivals to international exhibitions and his works now hang in private and institutional collections worldwide.

In 2016, Art Center Waco exhibited Davis' photographs that followed the stories of individual pilgrims to the 2013 Kumbh Mela, the largest religious pilgrimage in history. Davis completed his first short documentary film, Cloth Paper Dreams about this journey. The exhibit was well-received and the opening celebration is still talked about today.

Mushrooms / Hongos

The 14th Century Codex Vindobonensis Mexicanus includes repeated references to mysterious mushrooms. Los niños santos, or ‘the sacred children’, are still celebrated and consumed by the Mazatec Indians today. Also referred to as teonanacatl, or ‘flesh of the gods’, the mushrooms are said to cure people of illnesses, physical and spiritual. In 1955, American banker and ethnomycologist Gordon Wasson launched a series of expeditions in search of teonanácatl, ultimately locating and consuming the sacred mushrooms under the reluctant guidance of now famed curandera, or ‘healer’, Maria Sabina. Although Wasson had said he would protect the secrecy of the sacred ritual, in 1958 he sold the story and photographs to Life magazine and in the article also gave enough clues to allow the village to be sought out and identified by the hippy spiritual-seekers of the 1960s. Locals, upset with the onslaught of misguided Westerners, as well as for Maria sharing their ancient secrets, burned her house down and ostracized her from the community.

Huehue comes from the Nahuatl word for ancestors. According to tradition, from October 27th to Nov 5th every year, the dead begin arriving at the cemeteries, which have been transformed into portals for the deceased to return. Here, the living congregate to shed their personalities and identities to become huehuentones…men that sprout from the naval of the earth. The sarapes that they don on their heads represent the umbilical cord connection with the spirit world. The living lend their bodies to the souls of the dead, they sing, they dance, and become vehicles for those who have passed allowing loved ones to return and celebrate with their families and communities.
